About the Speaker:
Peter C. Newman joined what was then the Royal Canadian Naval Reserves for his inaugural training at HMCS York in 1947, when he was 18 years old, having previously played the drums with a Sea Cadet Band in Burlington. His was the last group of UNTDs to join as ordinary seamen. Almost immediately he was assigned to the Algerine, HMCS Portage, for sea training to Bermuda and later, among other ships, served aboard HMCS Swansea (a frigate) and the tribal class destroyer HMCS Iroquois. After earning his commission, he spent the next 40 years in various staff positions, most recently as a senior advisor to RAdm Tom Smith, being promoted to Captain in 1987. As well as a CD, he was appointed as an Officer and later promoted to Companion in the Order of Canada and has been awarded seven honourary doctorates –including from Queen’s, the Royal Military College, UBC and York universities. The author of 25 books that have sold more than two million copies, he is credited with revolutionizing the style of political and business writing, making his publications both more accessible and more revealing. He became editor-in-chief of the Toronto Star, the country’s largest circulation newspaper and later took over the editorship of Maclean’s, turning Canada’s national magazine into a newsweekly. Mr Newman was the recipient of the NATO Council’s 2010 St. Laurent Award.
