Listen as I interview Ambassador Selçuk Ünal. He is the 27th Turkish Ambassador to Canada. Ambassador Selçuk Ünal graduated from the Faculty of Political Sciences, Department of International Relations at the University of Ankara in 1992. He was the Third Secretary in the Western Europe Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1992 to 1995. This included military service. From 1997 to 2002, Ambassador Selçuk Ünal was the Second Secretary to the Turkish Embassy in Dublin, Ireland.

He then served as the First Secretary in the Middle East-Iraqi Department from 2000 to 2002. From 2002 to 2006, he was the Counsellor for the Turkish Permanent Mission to the UN office in Geneva. His Excellency then served as the Head of Department to the Deputy Special Adviser at the Cabinet of Foreign Minister from 2006 to 2008. This was followed by serving as the Counsellor to the Turkish Permanent Mission to the UN in New York from 2008 to 2010. From 2010 to 2013, he served as Deputy Director General of Information and Press Department and Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

About Magdalena Surma

Magdalena Surma is currently Canada's NATO Program Contributor and Outreach Coordinator. Former Program Editor of Global Horizons, Magdalena completed a BA in Legal Studies (Honours) and a Masters in Public Service at the University of Waterloo. She also attended Harvard during two summers, where she completed courses in psychology, government, and law. In addition, she successfully completed Harvard Law School’s Executive Education Program in Negotiation and Leadership. Magdalena is currently completing an LLB through University of London’s International Program. She is passionate about law, government, and charitable non-profit organizations. As an avid researcher, she hopes to extend her research to investigate women in security while examining society, culture, and international relations. In addition, Magdalena is also passionate about international business and economy. She is very excited about being involved with various projects at NATO, specifically engaging youth and society about international affairs. Apart from a love of politics, Magdalena enjoys fine art, ballet, and classical music.
