Joseph McQuade is a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for South Asian Studies, a branch of the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs. As a Gates Scholar at the University of Cambridge, he completed his PhD in History in 2017. He is currently finishing the manuscript for a forthcoming book on colonial law and the origins of terrorism in India from the mid-19th century up until Indian independence in 1947. He has been published in academic journals such as the Journal of World History and History Compass, as well online platforms including The Conversation and open Democracy. His current research examines terrorism and counter-insurgency in postcolonial India and Myanmar (Burma) up to the present day. He teaches on topics including world history, South Asian studies, and global terrorism.
