Matthew Sunil

Matthew Sunil is a Program Editor Intern with the NATO Association of Canada, where he researches NATO’s operational history, transatlantic relations, and Canada’s evolving role in global security. He also contributes to youth-led discourse on international security as a member of the National Defence and Strategic Alliances and United Nations committees with YATA–NATO Canada. Raised in both Norway and Canada, Matthew brings a cross-cultural perspective to diplomacy, collective security, and human well-being.

He is currently pursuing a Master of International Public Policy at the Balsillie School of International Affairs, focusing on human security, and international economic relations. He holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from McMaster University, where he served as Vice President of External Relations for the Political Science Students Association, Vice President of Administration for Amnesty International McMaster, and Managing Editor of the McMaster Undergraduate Journal of Law and Politics. Matthew also earned a Graduate Certificate in Project Management from George Brown College, graduating on the Dean’s Honour List.

Beyond academics, he has held frontline roles with The HUB in Hamilton and The Salvation Army in Stavanger, Norway—experiences that have deepened his commitment to connecting social policy, governance, and security. Looking ahead, Matthew aspires to advance a career in multilateral governance, working at the intersection of law, conflict resolution, and human security.

The NAOC has had a leading role in the recent transformation and modernization of the ATA, and helped to create and develop the Youth Atlantic Treaty Association (YATA).

    The NAOC has strong ties with the Government of Canada including Global Affairs Canada and the Department of National Defence. We are constantly working to create and maintain relationships with international organizations such as the World Bank Group, the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development, NATO Headquarters, the International Criminal Court, and other prominent international NGOs and think tanks.
