Sept 5: Commander Hugues Canuel – “A Sailor’s Experience with the NATO Training Mission in Afghanistan”

A Sailor’s Experience with the NATO Training Mission in Afghanistan

Commander Hugues Canuel deployed to Afghanistan in July 2011 as the Canadian mission in that country transitioned from combat operations in the Kandahar Province to a training role in the Kabul region. Commander Canuel was assigned to the NATO Training Mission – Afghanistan, serving successively as an advisor to the Afghan National Civil Order Police and a staff officer to the Deputy Commander Special Operations Forces.  He will discuss the challenges of standing up the Canadian contribution to the training mission and nurturing the growth of the Afghan National Security Forces.

About the Speaker:

Commander Hugues Canuel – A native of Matane, Québec and a graduate of the Collège militaire royale de Saint-Jean, Commander Canuel served extensively on ships of the Pacific and Atlantic Fleets, deploying twice to the Arabian Sea and Horn-of-Africa region since the dramatic events of 9/11 and rising to command of the Halifax-based HMCS PRESERVER.

Commander Canuel is currently employed as Directing Staff on the Joint Command and Staff Programme at the Canadian Forces College in Toronto and is enrolled as a PhD candidate in the War Studies Programme at the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario.
