The NATO Association of Canada is proud to co-host “Security Challenges in the Baltic Region: Realities and Perspectives,” a meeting with Mr. Janis Garisons, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Defence of Latvia. As tensions increase between Russia and the Baltic states, it is crucial for NATO to stand with its fellow Balkan allies. Canada, to this end, has sent 455 troops to Latvia as a show of its commitment towards the security of Eastern Europe. We hope this event will encourage further partnerships and dialogue between the Latvian and Canadian communities.
Janis Garisons is the State Secretary of the Ministry of Defense of Latvia. Mr. Garisons has extensive experience representing Latvia in security and diplomacy circles. Before assuming his current post, he previously served as Undersecretary of State – Policy Director. And prior to his time at the Ministry of Defence, Mr. Garisons worked within Latvia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the Director of the Security Policy Department where he dealt with “arms control issues, Russia and CIS.” Currently, Mr. Garisons plays an integral role in Latvia’s revitalization of its military helping to oversee a “rapid budget and capabilities increase.” In 2014, Mr. Garisons received an MA in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. Earlier, he received an MA in History from the University of Latvia.
